pH Meters & pH Monitoring Equipment
Always operate the pH meter in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines. Prior to sample testing, and at least hourly during continuous use, the instrument must be standardized. For sample analysis, thoroughly rinse the electrode using distilled water from a wash bottle. Remove excess moisture by gently blotting the tip with a soft tissue; avoiding wiping is critical, as friction can induce static interference or compromise the delicate glass membrane. Fully submerge the electrode so that the reference junction is completely immersed in the sample. A normal reading should stabilize within 20 to 30 seconds, and must not exceed one minute. Delayed stabilization typically indicates electrode fouling from fat or protein buildup, or permanent degradation. Although optional under CFR guidelines, a magnetic stir bar may be deployed to expedite stabilization, provided it is positioned safely away from the electrode.
When purchasing a pH meter, ensure you also acquire the necessary accessories: calibration buffers, distilled or deionized water, a spare electrode, batteries, and any manufacturer-recommended items.
